Scotty's 22 Brew
Architecture
Scotty’s 22 Brew opened its’ doors in December 2025, transforming a historic building into a hub of community, craftsmanship, and culture. Located at the corner of Main and East Streets, the building’s rich history—originally the Melvin Hotel in 1908, later the Imperial Hotel—comes alive through meticulous restoration. Today, this resilient structure stands as a testament to heritage and innovation, lovingly preserved and updated by brewing enthusiast Scott Benner.
Benner’s vision marries historic charm with modern urban appeal. As the building’s layers are carefully stripped away and restored, the original character begins to shine. Old oak doors, once part of an orphanage on State Route 38, are now fronting the new brewery, seamlessly blending past and present. Vintage tiles and marble floors have been refurbished, revealing the craftsmanship of a bygone era. A vintage vault-safe—a relic from the building’s early days—has been opened and restored, its shelves and fixtures carefully preserved to serve as a focal point that connects patrons with history.
The brewery features two bars—one shorter, accessible for handicapped guests, and a full-height bar for seating and ordering drinks—crafted from reclaimed oak that once served as the vault’s doors. The building’s historic integrity is further celebrated through the transformation of windows, replacing textured glass with clear panes that showcase the brewing process, inviting guests to witness the art of craft brewing firsthand.
As part of its community focus, Scotty’s 22 Brew sits within the Downtown Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA). The outdoor patio area has been outfitted with a barn-wood trellis and soft lighting that creates a warm, inviting atmosphere for socializing. Inside, a dedicated event room accommodates up to 15 people, perfect for small gatherings, celebrations, or casual meetups—making it a true neighborhood gathering spot.
Accessibility is a key element in the design. A newly installed handicap ramp replaces the original stairs, ensuring everyone can safely enjoy the space. The outdoor space is also enhanced with lighting that invites patrons to relax and connect under the evening sky.
Benner’s plans extend beyond beer, with future aspirations to brew hard cider. His unwavering dedication to restoring and invigorating this historic building results in a welcoming space where community, history, and craftsmanship coalesce. Scotty’s 22 Brew is now a dynamic pillar of downtown Washington Court House—an inviting haven that celebrates the town’s heritage while creating new memories for locals and visitors alike.
